Woodsy Fairfax perches on the flanks of Mt. Tamalpais and the end of the Ross Valley and provides backdoor access to the mountain and the Pacific Ocean beyond, as well as being the gateway to the San Geronimo Valley, Samual P. Taylor State Park, West Marin, and the Point Reyes National Seashore.   There is also easy access to the lands and lakes of the Marin Municipal Water District.  Fairfax’s funky downtown can seem unchanged since 1969, and it says something about the town that it is home to Marin’s oldest established cannabis collective!

The housing mix in Fairfax runs the gamut from upscale estates to tiny shacks to multi-unit apartment buildings.  Neighborhoods are mostly quiet and wooded, and its inland setting means its climate is warm compared to coastal Marin.  Fairfax is part of the Ross Valley School District and the Tamalpais Union High School District.
