One of the oldest towns in Marin County, Sausalito is perched on the hills above San Francisco Bay just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Almost every home has water views and many can see San Francisco. Old summer cottages sit next to modern designs on narrow hillside streets. Sausalito’s downtown is an extremely popular tourist destination, accessible by ferry from San Francisco or by bike or car over the bridge. Local shoppers frequent the Caledonia Street area.
Originally a fishing village and later an important shipbuilding hub, Sausalito has an extensive waterfront, much of it still given over to maritime industries and pursuits. The San Francisco Bay Model is located here. Sausalito also features several large and colorful houseboat communities.
Sausalito shares a school district with next door neighbor Marin City, and is part of the Tamalpais Union High School District.
